Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains a stunning and unparalleled achievement, American Woods -originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock-is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood. TASCHEN`s Wood Book reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes; for this purpose we have obtained the use of an extremely rare original set of volumes in very good condition, with minimal damage to the wood cuts. For all trees, now arranged in alphabetical order, three different cross-section cuts of wood are represented (radial, horizontal, and vertical), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colors and textures to be found among the many different wood types. Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts describing the trees` geographical origins and physical characteristics. Interior designers, craftsmen, nature enthusiasts, and artists alike will enjoy this beautiful collection of wood samples which includes many trees that are now very rare or completely extinct. The specimens, as things of beauty, are greatly to be prized…. The work is valuable and unique. -The Boston Globe, on the original edition Издание на английском, французском и немецком языках.

GILBERT KEITH CHESTERTON was born in London on May 29, 1874, and before the turn of the century established himself as a free-lance journalist and reviewer. From the publication in 1900 of his first book of poetry, The Wild Knight, until his death in 1936, Chesterton was one of the most prolific and best-known figures on the English literary scene. During those three and a half decades he turned out dozens of volumes of political and social commentary, literary criticism and biography, theological essays, poetry, short stories and novels. Among his best-known works of fiction are The Napoleon ofNotting Hill (1904) and The Man Who Was Thursday (1908). To the connoisseur of the detective short story in its classic form, the five volumes that chronicle the adventures of Chestertons priest-detective Father Brown are unique in the genre. The Father Brown stories comprise one of the few sequences that may be compared, for inventiveness and charm, with the work of Chestertons great contemporary Arthur Conan Doyle. The six stories in this collection, from the first two Father Brown books, The Innocence of Father Brown (1911) and The Wisdom of Father Brown (1914), trace the sleuths early adventures, which often feature the arch-criminal Flambeau (who after a brief spell as Browns adversary retires from his life of crime to become the clerics friend and frequent companion). The later volumes were The Incredulity of Father Brown (1926), The Secret of Father Brown (1927) and The Scandal of Father Brown (1935).

This amazing compilation of decorative motifs from around the world is unparalleled in its range of coverage with examples from early Greek, Roman and Egyptian designs through those of the 19th century. Geographically diverse, the book covers ornamentation from Asia and Africa as well as Europe and the Americas. Originally published in the 19th century in two volumes, this work by Auguste Racinet was an invaluable resource to artists, designers and architects when it was first published and continues to be so today. The period when Racinets volumes were being published for the first time (1869 through 1887) saw a renewed interest in classicism and the decorative arts and Racinets work was certainly influential. With 220 colour plates comprising over 1500 decorative motifs derived from illuminated manuscripts, jewellery, tiles, weaponry, wall painting and other sources, the book is not only inspirational, but also serves as both a visual reference of the motifs and an insight into the aesthetics of different cultures and periods. We are pleased to offer this opulent and beautifully colourful title in a combined single volume. A book that every graphic designer, architect, fashion designer or artist must have, it will also appeal to those interested in aesthetics and visual culture.
